American Carports is who I chose to replace my garage aftert the Park Fire. The process was fantastic. I worked with the dealer Mr. And Mrs. Bernard. Mrs. Bernard helped me with the plans, twice! They even invited me into their home, she knew I was stressed. We finalized the plans. I obtained the permit and then everything was set. The builders were scheduled properly and the garage was completely in a day! It is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend American Carports to anyone.
Run for the hills ....
I hired American Carport to build my shop while handling permitting. They insisted they wouldn't build without it which is fine. Finally after much time passed with no communication and after much nagging on the phone by us, they claimed to have the permit, I paid, and they built the building -- but they didn't actually secure the permit and my county says this building is not allowed. To relieve themselves of liability, they strongarmed me stating that they were coming out to tear down my building, that is, unless I signed a new contract removing their responsibility for permitting.
Do yourself a favor and find a local builder. They are plentiful in most areas.
Avoid American Carports like the plague.
This will be an ongoing review until my issues are resolved. Down payment was made in June and due to several set backs with American Carports we finally had a building installed late November. Unfortunately it was installed incorrectly by the manufacture and denied by the county. This is due to the installers splicing bottom rails and not using a solid rail as shown on the purchased drawings. I notified Joseph the salesman immediately letting him know the county would like a revised print showing the base rails being spliced together. He offered his apology and after several follow-ups he said they would have to tear down the building and rebuild in order to replace the bottom rail. He said the installers would be in touch. Then they do not even have the courtesy to call me prior to taking three weeks off for the holidays to update my on my building. This has caused several issues with flooding as I have not been able to install gutters. Then on January 11th I begin following up with the salesman's supervisor and went straight to voicemail. This is where it get's interesting... I work from home and look out the window to see the installers in my driveway with a floor jack to jack up the building and replace the bottom rail. They literally drove 9 hours up without scheduling? I had to step away from work for several hours calling every number I could find and finally get ahold of someone. I was told on the phone that they can either jack up the building or come back in March/April when the weather has cleared to do it all over again. Then after many conversations that morning they finally agreed that they would revise the prints to satisfy the county and the installers told me they would not get paid for their time and drove back to California. WOW right... Then I receive my revised plans to submit to the county and they did not match the pictures I sent them and was missing hardware so I requested that they expedite me the hardware so I can finish the install myself. Just received tracking that the hardware is on the way so this weekend I will attach and review every detail of the print for accuracy prior to being embarrassed by a county inspector. In my opinion this company does not take responsibility, false advertising, gives you the run around and puts you in the middle of whose at fault between builders and engineers. Update: still a crappy carport many years later They give you inaccurate lead-times, incorrect prints and all at the consumers expense. American Carports had the opportunity to make this right when I first informed them of the issue but they continued to make the problem worse.
You guys have my number and can call me if you want to work this out.
Building turned out great but after a number of issues. I took the day off of work on the day they were supposed to arrive and ended up having to call them to find out where they were. After repeatedly calling the installer and getting no answer, I ended up calling the corporate number only to be told they had gotten a flat tire and wouldn’t be able to show up until the next day. (Saturday) I asked why no one had called me and they told me they were going to. They showed up the next day and worked for half a day and I was told they needed to run down the road to finish another job and would be gone two hours. After four hours, I called them to see where they were and no one would answer. After calling the number about 10 times someone finally answered and said they would be here in 15 min….. so 30 minutes later they showed up to finish the job. They ended up having to work until 930 at night, which was several hours after dark. They also punched a hole in one of my panels which I told them about and they didn’t even bother to fix it. Once it got dark, they were using the flashlights on their cell phones and their drill drivers to see what they were doing. They then had me sign a piece of paper, even though I was unable to inspect the building because it was dark out. A few days later, the inspector came out and I failed final inspection because they only put about half the anchor bolts that were required per the drawings. I immediately sent photos and a picture of the failed final inspection notice. At the time I was paying for two storage units that I was planning on moving into my new garage and couldn’t now because of the delay and asked them to please expedite the repair as it was now costing me money. I kept calling them and emailing them to figure out when they were coming back out and kept getting the runaround. They finally told me what day they would be out and at 4:00 PM on that day I still had not received a call or anything on when they would show up. I had to call them like four times before I was finally given an answer which was around 6:00 PM which again would be dark soon after. They ended up showing up at 6:30 PM and again working in the dark with just cell phone flashlights and drill driver lights so I pulled out my big spotlight to help them out. They ended up having to pull the whole panel off that had the hole in it and replace it as well as installing the remaining anchor bolts so it would pass inspection. And of course, had me sign another document, even though I couldn’t fully inspect because it was dark. I would never use this company again or ever recommend them. Work is OK but communication and planning is horrible. Installers don’t answer their phone and the company is not open on the weekends so if you’re having weekend work done, you’ll never get any answers to anything. The whole experience with these guys was very frustrating.
