Metal Museum
Founded in 1976, the Metal Museum in Memphis serves as the only North American institution devoted exclusively to the art and craft of fine metalwork. Located at 374 Metal Museum Dr, Memphis, TN 38106, the museum draws visitors, artists, and scholars from across the United States and around the world to explore its rotating exhibitions of historic and contemporary metal objects, as well as a permanent collection that includes artifacts, books, and archival materials.
The museum’s programming extends beyond exhibition space. Its Metals Studios house a working blacksmith shop, a foundry, a small metals lab, and a design lab, providing hands‑on education for metalsmiths of all skill levels. Through workshops, classes, and community‑engagement events, the museum functions as an art school, an arts organization, and a venue for special events. The on‑site sculpture garden and event facilities accommodate gatherings that celebrate metal artistry.
Since 1983, the museum has honored leading practitioners through its Master Metalsmiths series, showcasing the work of artists recognized for excellence in fabrication, blacksmithing, enameling, casting, and related disciplines. These exhibitions highlight individuals with extensive studio experience who also contribute to teaching the craft.
Overall, the Metal Museum offers a comprehensive experience for anyone interested in metalworking—whether as a visitor, a student, a practicing artist, or an event host—by preserving, promoting, and advancing the field through exhibitions, collections,
